The Mazatapec strain as a living mycelium culture, packaged in an ampoule with its own sterile syringe — everything you need to inoculate a substrate you have prepared yourself.

Mazatapec is named for the Mazatec people of the Sierra Mazateca in Oaxaca, whose ceremonial use of psilocybin mushrooms is the tradition this entire category descends from. It is a steady, moderate strain with a characteristic dark purple-brown to black spore print.

One thing worth saying plainly: the Latin name on the packaging is invented. It is not in any recognised index and it does not describe a distinct species. That is normal in this trade and we would still rather point it out than reproduce it as fact. The culture is a known cultivated lineage, which is what matters for growing it.

Since you are working with a culture rather than a print, it is worth knowing what a spore print is, why Mazatapec’s is a useful identifying feature, and why we sell cultures instead:

1. A spore print is exactly what it sounds like: a cap laid gill-down on foil or glass, covered, and left for a day. What it drops is a fingerprint in spores.
2. The colour is a genuine identification feature. Psilocybe cubensis prints dark purple-brown to black, and that colour is one of the standard field marks separating it from lookalikes with white, rust or brown prints.
3. Prints have to germinate before anything happens. That germination phase is slow and it is the point at which most contamination takes hold.
4. A living culture has already passed that stage. It goes straight to colonising, which is faster and gives contaminants a much smaller window.
5. Which is why we sell cultures. Prints are useful for identification and for long-term storage; cultures are better for actually growing something.

Mazatapec itself is a moderate, unremarkable-in-a-good-way strain: 22 to 25 °C, no particular temperament, and a steady result. It is a good strain to learn technique on because it will not flatter or punish you.

4. Inoculating your substrate

1. Everything gets cleaned before anything gets opened: your hands, the work surface, the outside of the ampoule.
2. Work with the window shut and nothing moving the air.
3. Take the sterile syringe out last, and keep the needle clear of every surface.
4. Load it, then inoculate at multiple small points rather than one large injection.
5. Seal, date and store in the dark at the right temperature until colonisation finishes.

4.1 What success and failure look like

• What you want to see is white, fluffy growth radiating from each site you injected, expanding week on week until the whole substrate is white.
• What ends it is colour: green, grey or blue-green means mould has won and nothing recovers a colonised batch.
• What also ends it is smell. Sour or ammoniac means bacteria, often before anything is visible.
• Resist opening the container. Inspect through the walls; every lid lifted is another opportunity for a spore to land.

A spore print is an identification tool. A living culture is a growing tool. They are not interchangeable, and the germination step is where most attempts fail.
