1. Golden Teacher ‘Psilocyne Aurumescens’ Spore Spray

A living mycelium culture of the Golden Teacher strain, supplied in a culture ampoule with a sterile syringe. It lets you inoculate your own substrate at home without working from a spore print.

Golden Teacher is the golden-capped classic and the most contamination-resistant strain in common cultivation. If this is your first time working from a culture rather than a finished kit, it is the one to start with.

A note on the name. This product is sold under a Latin-looking binomial that does not appear in any recognised mycological index. Names of that kind are trade conventions rather than accepted taxa. We would rather say so than let a made-up species name sit unchallenged on a product page — the culture itself is a well-known cultivated strain, and that is what you are buying.

Legal status: Because they contain no psilocybin, spores and cultures are sold legally in the Netherlands. That is not true everywhere: cultivating psilocybin mushrooms is prohibited in many countries, Germany and the UK among them, and a few jurisdictions restrict the spores as well. These are supplied as cultivation and study material and the legal position where you live is yours to check.

3. First culture

Moving from a grow kit to a culture is a real step up in difficulty, and it is worth being honest about what changes rather than presenting it as the same hobby with an extra stage:

Grow kitWorking from a culture
Substrate arrives fully colonisedYou sterilise and colonise it yourself
No sterile technique requiredSterile technique decides the outcome
Failure means a poor yieldFailure means a mouldy container and starting again
Days to first pinsWeeks before you know whether it worked
No equipment beyond the boxSterilised substrate, ideally a still-air box, and patience

3.1 Why Golden Teacher for a first attempt

  • It is the most contamination-resistant strain in common cultivation. That is exactly the property that matters when your technique is not yet good.
  • It is slower than aggressive strains, and on a first attempt that trade is worth making. Resilience beats speed while you are learning.
  • It is well documented. When something looks wrong, there is more written about this strain than any other.
  • It fails gracefully. A marginal Golden Teacher batch often still produces; a marginal McKennaii batch goes green.

Hold it at 23 to 25 °C, in the dark, sealed, and resist the urge to open the container. Colonisation is a waiting game and every check is a risk.

4. Inoculating your substrate

  1. Still room, shut window, wiped surface, washed hands. None of this is optional and all of it is free.
  2. Alcohol-wipe the ampoule before breaking any seal.
  3. Open the syringe sterile and keep it that way — the needle touches the ampoule and the substrate, and nothing else.
  4. Spread the inoculation over several sites. More colonisation fronts, faster coverage.
  5. Then seal it and forget about it in a dark place at temperature.

4.1 What success and failure look like

  • Going well: white mycelium creeping out from the injection sites, merging over one to two weeks into a single white mass.
  • Going wrong: patches of green, grey or blue-green. Mould, and the batch is finished at that point.
  • Also going wrong: an ammonia or sour smell, which is bacterial and usually arrives before the visual cue.
  • Keep it shut. Look through the container rather than opening it — each opening is a fresh risk.

A grow kit fails by yielding badly. A culture fails by going green. That difference is the whole reason to start with the most forgiving strain there is.

  • A living mycelium culture of the Golden Teacher strain, with a sterile syringe.
  • The most contamination-resistant strain in common cultivation — the right first culture.
  • Psilocyne aurumescens” is a trade name; the species is Psilocybe cubensis.
  • Slower than aggressive strains, and far more forgiving while you learn technique.
  • Colonises at 23 to 25 °C. Keeps six months refrigerated.
  • Legal in the Netherlands; cultivation is illegal in many other countries. 18+ only.
  • Order before 16:00 on weekdays for same-day dispatch in plain, unmarked packaging.
Is this easier than a grow kit?
No. A grow kit arrives fully colonised, which removes the hardest step. Working from a culture means doing that step yourself, and it is where most home attempts go wrong.
Do I need sterile equipment?
You need clean equipment and a still room. A still-air box helps considerably and is easy to make. Sterilising the substrate is the part you cannot skip.
Why a culture rather than a spore print or syringe?
A living culture is already past germination, so it colonises faster and gives contamination less of a window. Spore prints and syringes have to germinate first, which is where a lot of attempts fail.
What temperature does it need?
Colonisation generally runs warmer than fruiting. Check the specification table above for this strain and hold it steady, in the dark, until the substrate is fully white.
How do I know it worked?
White growth spreading outward from each injection point within one to two weeks. Anything green, grey or blue-green is contamination and the batch is lost.
Is it legal?
Spores and cultures contain no psilocybin and are sold legally in the Netherlands. Cultivating the mushrooms is illegal in many other countries. Check your own jurisdiction.
