Third Eye is a 15-gram pack of fresh sclerotia and the least expensive truffle product we carry, sold under a name borrowed from the Colombian mushroom strain.

There is an additional naming wrinkle here worth knowing: Psilocybe columbiana is a genuine species, described by Gastón Guzmán in 1978 from Colombian páramo meadows — and it is not what is in this pack either. The name on this product is a trade designation borrowed from a cubensis strain, which was itself named after the region.

A note on the name, because it is worth being straight about. The Latin-style name on this product is a commercial designation rather than an accepted species. More than that: the mushroom strain it borrows its name from does not form sclerotia at all. Only a handful of Psilocybe species produce truffles — principally tampanensis, mexicana and galindoi — so whatever is in this pack is one of those, sold under a name borrowed from the mushroom world. We have asked the supplier to confirm which, and we will put it on this page when they do.

3. A first truffle

At €13.50 this is the cheapest way into truffles we sell, so it is worth writing this page for the person most likely to be buying it: somebody who has not done this before.

3.1 Six things to know first

1. Fifteen grams is a full dose, not a pack to work through. Most first-time guidance points at five to seven and a half grams. Weigh it.
2. You will need a scale that reads to 0.1 g. It costs less than the pack and it is the difference between knowing what you took and guessing.
3. Onset takes thirty to sixty minutes and sometimes longer. The quiet first half hour is where almost every difficult session begins, because somebody decides it is not working.
4. Have someone sober with you. Not because something will go wrong, but because judgement is genuinely impaired and one clear head makes everything manageable.
5. Clear the whole day. Four to six hours plus a tail, and a night you will want to sleep through.
6. Check the cautions properly. Family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, and any antidepressant, MAOI or lithium prescription, are genuine reasons not to do this at all rather than reasons to be careful.

3.2 What it will actually be like

Broadly: some nausea in the first hour, then a gradual shift in how colour, sound and thought behave, building over an hour or two, holding for a couple of hours, and resolving gradually. Emotions move more than people expect and time stops behaving normally. Most first experiences at a moderate amount are described afterwards as interesting and manageable rather than overwhelming, which is exactly what a first one should be.

4. Preparation and use

4.1 Getting it right

1. Scales, not eyes. Weigh the amount, seal and refrigerate the remainder immediately.
2. Light food two to three hours ahead. The middle ground between a full stomach and an empty one.
3. Chew it properly or brew it. Fifteen minutes in hot — never boiling — water is the standard alternative.
4. Ninety minutes before any further decision. Onset is 30 to 60 minutes and it can run longer than that.
5. No plans afterwards. Four to six hours, plus the tail.

4.2 Setting

• One sober person stays in the room with you. They know what you took and roughly when.
• Sit or lie down before it begins, not after.
• Clear the space first: no flames, no glass, no stairs, nothing sharp within reach.
• Trip stopper nearby, even if it stays unopened. Most do.
• Nothing else taken with it, including alcohol and cannabis.

4.3 Cautions

• 18+ only.
• Avoid entirely during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• Avoid entirely if psychosis, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder appear in your history or your family’s. Predisposed people can have episodes precipitated by psychedelics, and no dose is low enough to make that safe.
• Do not combine with antidepressants, MAOIs or lithium without medical advice; the lithium combination is associated with seizures and other serious events.
• Do not take it with alcohol, cannabis or anything else.
• Do not drive or operate machinery afterwards.
• Some nausea early on is usual; eat lightly beforehand rather than fasting.
• Keep refrigerated, sealed, and away from children and pets.
