LSA gets described as “natural LSD”, which is close enough to be misleading. The relationship is worth setting out properly:

1. Both are ergolines. LSA (lysergic acid amide, or ergine) and LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) share a core structure, which is why the names look alike.
2. LSA occurs naturally; LSD does not. LSA is found in the seeds of several Convolvulaceae species — Hawaiian baby woodrose, morning glory, Rivea corymbosa. LSD was synthesised by Albert Hofmann in 1938 from ergot alkaloids.
3. They are far apart in potency. LSD is active in micrograms; LSA is not remotely comparable on that scale.
4. And the reported experience is different in kind, not only in degree. LSA is described as sedating and introspective with a heavy body component, where LSD is described as visual and stimulating. People expecting the second from the first are consistently disappointed.
5. Both constrict blood vessels. This is the ergoline family trait that matters most practically, and it is why anyone with a cardiovascular condition should avoid LSA-containing products entirely.
