One gram of Salvia Mystic 5X, the lowest strength in the Mystic range. Salvia divinorum is a member of the sage family from the Sierra Mazateca in Oaxaca, Mexico, where it has a long history of ritual and healing use among Mazatec practitioners.

Ten grams of dried leaf and one gram of 5X extract are not the same purchase in any sense that matters. This is the entry point to the range, and the only strength we would recommend to anyone who has not used salvia before.

Its active compounds are salvinorin A and salvinorin B, and they do not work the way other psychedelics do. Salvinorin A acts at the kappa-opioid receptor rather than on the serotonin system, which is why salvia is not comparable to mushrooms, cacti or LSD in either character or duration.

Reported effects include two-dimensional perception, a sensation of leaving the body, and a loss of awareness of the physical room. That last one is the reason almost everything on this page is about preparation rather than product.

3. What the “X” number actually means

The multiplier is the single most misunderstood thing about salvia extracts, and misunderstanding it is how people get caught out:

• It is a concentration ratio, not a dose. 5X means leaf material has been concentrated so that a given weight carries roughly five times the salvinorin of plain leaf.
• So the amount you use shrinks as the number rises. A quantity that is gentle at 5X is not gentle at 20X.
• It is not standardised across brands. One producer’s 10X is not guaranteed to match another’s.
• 5X is where to start. Not because it is weak — it is not — but because it gives you room to learn what salvia does before the margin for error narrows.

4. Before you use it

4.1 Preparation

Salvia is unusual in that almost all of the safety of a session comes from what you do beforehand:

• Have a sober sitter present. Someone who stays sober, stays in the room and knows what you have taken.
• Sit or lie down before you start. Do not stand, walk or handle anything.
• Clear the space. No open flames, no stairs, nothing breakable within reach.
• Have a trip stopper to hand. Knowing it is there matters even if you never use it.
• Nothing else alongside it. No alcohol, no cannabis, no other substance.

4.2 Do not use this if

• Not for anyone under 18.
• Not for anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Do not use if you or a close family member has a history of psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or another serious mental health condition. Psychedelics can precipitate episodes in people predisposed to them.
• Do not use alongside alcohol, cannabis, SSRIs, MAOIs or any prescription medication without medical advice.
• Do not drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day.
