One gram of Salvia Mystic 10X, twice the concentration of the 5X. Salvia divinorum is a member of the sage family from the Sierra Mazateca in Oaxaca, Mexico, where it has a long history of ritual and healing use among Mazatec practitioners.

The step from 5X to 10X is a doubling, and people who treat it as an increment tend to regret it. If the 5X was manageable, halve the quantity here rather than repeating it.

The compound responsible is salvinorin A, alongside the related salvinorin B. It is pharmacologically peculiar: a non-nitrogenous molecule that binds the kappa-opioid receptor, where the classical psychedelics all work through serotonin. Nothing about the resulting experience resembles them.

The acute phase is unusually short, commonly twenty minutes to an hour, and unusually intense while it lasts. Users describe flattened, two-dimensional vision and a sense of being somewhere other than the room they are in. Which is why the rest of this page is mostly about preparation.

3. Why salvia is unlike other psychedelics

People arrive at salvia with expectations borrowed from mushrooms or LSD, and almost none of them transfer. It works through an entirely different mechanism — salvinorin A acts on the kappa-opioid receptor rather than the serotonin system — which is why the experience does not resemble a classical psychedelic at all.

• It is fast. Onset is close to immediate rather than building over half an hour.
• It is short. Commonly twenty minutes to an hour, against six or more for mushrooms.
• It is disorienting rather than euphoric. The literature describes two-dimensional perception, a sense of leaving the body, and loss of awareness of the room.
• Experience elsewhere does not carry over. Having taken mushrooms tells you very little about how you will handle this.

4.1 Preparation

The preparation below is not boilerplate. It is the whole of the harm reduction available for this plant:

• A sober sitter, in the room. Not next door, not on the phone — present, sober, and told what you have taken.
• Get down before you start. Sitting or lying. Never standing, never mid-task.
• Strip the room. Nothing burning, nothing breakable, no stairs and no open windows within reach.
• Trip stopper within arm’s reach. The reassurance is worth more than the capsules.
• On its own. No drink, no cannabis, nothing else in the mix.

4.2 Do not use this if

• Strictly 18+.
• Not during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
• Avoid entirely if you or anyone in your immediate family has a history of psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or another serious psychiatric condition — psychedelics can trigger episodes in people who are predisposed.
