3.1 What medium strength is actually good for

• A first experience, because there is room between a pleasant afternoon and more than you wanted.
• Learning how you respond, which a strong strain teaches you very little about because everything happens at once.
• Sharing an occasion, where matching amounts is easier and mistakes are less consequential.
• Microdosing, since a 15-gram pack divides neatly and a milder strain gives a wider margin at small amounts.
• Repeat use, which is where most people end up. A strain you can take without clearing two days around it is one you actually use.

4.1 Getting it right

1. Put it on a scale. One that reads to 0.1 g. Sclerotia vary in size and guessing by eye is how people take double what they intended.
2. Something light two or three hours before, not a full meal and not nothing at all. The first makes onset unpredictable, the second makes nausea worse.
3. Chew properly or brew it. These are dense and tough. Thorough chewing helps absorption; steeping for a quarter of an hour in hot but not boiling water is the alternative when the texture puts you off.
4. Then wait ninety minutes before touching any more. Onset commonly runs 30 to 60 minutes and sometimes beyond. Redosing at forty-five minutes is the mistake behind most difficult evenings.
5. Book out the day. Four to six hours of effects, an afterglow after that, and a night you will want to sleep through.

4.2 Setting

• A sober sitter, in the room. Not next door, not on the phone — present, sober, and told what you have taken.
• Get down before you start. Sitting or lying. Never standing, never mid-task.
• Strip the room. Nothing burning, nothing breakable, no stairs and no open windows within reach.
• Trip stopper within arm’s reach. The reassurance is worth more than the capsules.
• On its own. No drink, no cannabis, nothing else in the mix.
