Psilocybe Nirwana Truffles by Royal Magic are rated 6 out of 6 — the top of the range and among the strongest sclerotia products available. Fifteen grams of fresh sclerotia in a sealed pack, and intended exclusively for experienced users.

The name points at ego dissolution, and the marketing language around it — profound inner stillness, complete dissolution of the self — describes something real. It is also the single experience people are least prepared for, and section 3 is about that rather than about the product.

3. Ego dissolution

This is worth spelling out properly, because it is the effect that most often turns a strong session into a frightening one, and almost entirely because nobody explained it in advance:

• It is a real, documented phenomenon. At high doses psilocybin can dissolve the ordinary sense of being a separate self — the boundary between you and everything else stops being obvious. It is studied under that name in the clinical literature.
• Described afterwards, it is often profound. People report it as among the most significant experiences of their lives, and the research on it takes that seriously.
• Experienced live and unprepared, it can be terrifying. The loss of self can present as dying. That is not a metaphor people use loosely — it is how it is commonly described, and being unprepared for it is what makes it frightening rather than remarkable.
• Resisting it makes it worse. This is the single most consistent piece of guidance from every source that discusses it: the distress comes from fighting, and the standard advice is to let go rather than to hold on.
• It passes. Always. The self reassembles as the effects decline and no lasting loss occurs. Knowing that in advance is most of the preparation.

3.1 Preparing for a session where it might happen

1. Read about it before, not during. Knowing what it is called and that it ends is what turns it from an emergency into an experience.
2. A sober sitter who also knows. Somebody who understands what is happening can say the one sentence that helps. Somebody who does not may panic and make it worse.
3. Lying down, quiet, dark. Not a party, not outdoors, not with people you do not know well.
4. Agree a phrase in advance — something the sitter can say that means “this is what you expected and it will pass”.
5. Nothing scheduled for the next day either. The processing afterwards matters as much as the session.
6. And do not go looking for it. Chasing ego dissolution is a poor reason to take a large amount. It happens or it does not.

4. Preparation and use

4.1 Getting it right

• Weigh, then put the pack away. Having the rest in front of you is how a measured dose stops being one.
• A light meal a few hours earlier takes the edge off the nausea without slowing onset much.
• Chew it well. If the taste is the obstacle, steep it in hot water for a quarter of an hour instead.
• Wait a full ninety minutes. Onset commonly takes 30 to 60 and sometimes longer.
• Clear the day. Four to six hours of effects and an afterglow beyond that.

4.2 Setting

• A sober sitter for the duration. Told in advance what you have taken and how much.
• Down before onset, sitting or lying, not standing about.
• Make the room safe while you still can. No fire, no glass, no stairs, no open windows.
• Keep a trip stopper to hand. Knowing it is there does most of the work.
• On its own and nothing else.

4.3 Cautions

• You need to be 18 or over.
• Not for use in pregnancy or during breastfeeding.
• Do not use it at all if psychosis, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder run in your family or your own history. The risk of precipitating an episode does not scale down with the dose.
• Keep it away from antidepressants, MAOIs and lithium without medical advice — the lithium combination in particular is associated with seizures.
• One thing at a time: no alcohol, no cannabis, nothing else in the mix.
• Nothing that needs driving or machinery for the rest of the day.
• Some nausea in the first hour is usual rather than a warning sign.
• Fridge, sealed, out of reach of children and pets.
