A living mycelium culture of the Mexican strain, supplied in a culture ampoule with a sterile syringe. It lets you inoculate your own substrate at home without working from a spore print.

The Mexican strain is the classic first grow: energetic, visual and forgiving. It is the lineage most closely associated with the Mesoamerican tradition that brought psilocybin to Western attention in the 1950s.

A note on the name. This product is sold under a Latin-looking binomial that does not appear in any recognised mycological index. Names of that kind are trade conventions rather than accepted taxa. We would rather say so than let a made-up species name sit unchallenged on a product page — the culture itself is a well-known cultivated strain, and that is what you are buying.

3. Stropharia

This one is the exception on our shelf: Stropharia cubensis is not an invented name. It is a real historical synonym, and the story behind it is a small piece of mycological history.

1. 1906: the species is described from Cuba as Stropharia cubensis — hence cubensis, “from Cuba”.
2. Later work reclassifies it into Psilocybe, where it has remained ever since.
3. The old name persisted in the trade long after mycology had moved on, which is why it still appears on packaging today.
4. Both names refer to the same organism. Psilocybe cubensis is the current one.

So this label is out of date rather than fictional — a distinction worth drawing, because several of the other names on this shelf are not.

4. Inoculating your substrate

1. Wash your hands thoroughly and wipe the outside of the ampoule with an alcohol wipe. Work in a still room with the window shut.
2. Open the sterile syringe carefully without touching the needle or letting it brush anything.
3. Draw up the culture from the ampoule, keeping everything you touch clean.
4. Inject into the substrate through the injection port or a flame-sterilised entry point, in several small amounts spread across the surface rather than all in one place.
5. Seal, label and leave it in the dark at the strain’s colonisation temperature. Do not open it again until it is fully colonised.

4.1 What success and failure look like

• Going well: white mycelium creeping out from the injection sites, merging over one to two weeks into a single white mass.
• Going wrong: patches of green, grey or blue-green. Mould, and the batch is finished at that point.
• Also going wrong: an ammonia or sour smell, which is bacterial and usually arrives before the visual cue.
• Keep it shut. Look through the container rather than opening it — each opening is a fresh risk.

Stropharia cubensis is genuinely old rather than genuinely made up. The species moved to Psilocybe decades ago and the packaging never caught up.
