1. Mazatapec Growkit — 1200 cc

A 1200 cc kit colonised with Mazatapec mycelium on rye grain, vermiculite and perlite. The strain takes its name from the Mazatec people of the Sierra Mazateca in Oaxaca, whose ceremonial use of psilocybin mushrooms is the tradition that everything in this category ultimately traces back to.

It is one of the few cubensis strains for which published alkaloid figures are commonly quoted: roughly 0.61% psilocybin and 0.08% psilocin by dry weight. Those numbers are more useful than they look, and section 3 explains how to read them.

Every kit ships with the pre-colonised substrate box, a grow bag with a built-in micro air filter, and two paperclips. No spore syringe, no still-air box, no pressure cooker — the sterile laboratory stage is already done.

3. Reading the numbers

Alkaloid percentages get quoted constantly and understood rarely. Four things make them meaningful:

1. They are dry weight, not fresh. Fresh mushrooms are roughly 90% water, so a figure quoted against dried material describes something around ten times more concentrated than the fresh mushroom in your hand. Confusing the two is the single commonest error in this whole subject.
2. They are averages across a sample, not a specification. Alkaloid content varies between flushes, between individual mushrooms in the same flush, and with growing conditions. Two mushrooms from one kit are not identical.
3. Psilocybin and psilocin are not interchangeable. Psilocybin is a prodrug: the body converts it to psilocin, which is the active compound. Both appear in the figures because both are present.
4. Drying and storage change them. Alkaloid content degrades with heat, light and time, which is why storage conditions appear in the specification table.

3.1 What that means practically

You cannot calculate a dose from a percentage on a product page, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling the precision available. The figures are useful for comparing strains in general terms and useless for arithmetic. What actually governs an experience is the amount taken, the individual, the setting and the preparation covered in section 5.

On its own terms Mazatapec is a steady, moderate kit: 200 to 400 g fresh across three to four flushes, happiest at 22 to 25 °C with humidity in the 90 to 95% range. The dark purple-brown to black spore print is characteristic and is one of the field marks for the species.

4. Setting it up

1. Wipe down, wash up, shut the window. Mould spores are already in the room; the point is not to help them.
2. Cold water, lid on, twelve hours. The substrate needs to take up water before it will fruit.
3. Pour it all out. Leave the box damp, never wet.
4. Grow bag, upright, double fold, two clips.
5. Warm spot, indirect light, no radiator underneath it.
6. Open daily for a few seconds. Fresh air is the fruiting trigger.

4.1 Harvesting and later flushes

• Harvest as the veil begins to break. Not before, and definitely not several days after.
• Twist from the base to release it without lifting substrate.
• Do the whole flush together, including the small ones.
• Restart immediately: refill, twelve hours, drain, back into the grow bag.

4.2 If something goes wrong

• Any colour that is not white or mushroom-coloured is bad news. Green and grey patches are mould and the kit is finished; seal it and bin it rather than opening it indoors.
• Trust your nose. A sour, ammonia-like or generally wrong smell means bacteria have taken the substrate.
• Fine grey cobwebbing spreading over the fruits is cobweb mould. More air exchange, immediately.
• Bluing where you have touched a mushroom is not a problem. It is oxidation and it is expected.

5. Before you use them

5.1 Preparation

• A sober sitter, in the room. Not next door, not on the phone — present, sober, and told what you have taken.
• Get down before you start. Sitting or lying. Never standing, never mid-task.
• Strip the room. Nothing burning, nothing breakable, no stairs and no open windows within reach.
• Trip stopper within arm’s reach. The reassurance is worth more than the capsules.
• On its own. No drink, no cannabis, nothing else in the mix.

5.2 Do not use these if

• Strictly 18+.
• Not during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
• Avoid entirely if you or anyone in your immediate family has a history of psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or another serious psychiatric condition — psychedelics can trigger episodes in people who are predisposed.
• No alcohol, no cannabis, and nothing prescribed — SSRIs and MAOIs in particular — without medical advice.
• No driving and no machinery for the remainder of the day.
• Legality differs by country and changes over time. Confirm your own before ordering.

Dry weight is not fresh weight. A fresh mushroom is about 90% water, and mixing the two up is the commonest mistake in this entire subject.
