1. Golden Teacher Growkit — 1200 cc

A 1200 cc kit of Golden Teacher, the golden-capped Psilocybe cubensis line that most people reach for first — and keep coming back to. It is the most contamination-resistant strain we stock and the safest bet for a first grow.

The trade-off against an aggressive strain like B+ is speed: Golden Teacher grows a little slower. What you get in exchange is resilience, and on a first attempt that is a much better trade.

What arrives: a fully colonised substrate tub, a grow bag with an integrated air filter, and two paperclips to close it. Everything the laboratory stage requires has already happened.

3. Flushes

Golden Teacher is built for multiple flushes, and how you handle the gaps between them decides how much you actually get. The economics are worth spelling out because they are counter-intuitive:

3.1 Getting the later flushes

• Re-soak immediately after harvesting, not a few days later. The substrate dries out and a dry block will not restart.
• Twelve hours in cold water, then drain completely. The same routine as the first setup.
• Take the whole flush at once. Leaving stragglers to grow delays the next cycle for no gain.
• Remove any mushroom that aborts — small, dark, stalled fruits. They rot in place and invite bacteria.
• Keep the air exchange going between flushes. The kit is still alive during the gap.

Because that first flush carries almost half the total, temperature stability in the opening fortnight is worth more than anything you do later. Hold 23 to 25 °C, keep it out of direct sun, and air the bag daily.

4. Setting it up

1. Work clean and work still. Isopropyl on the surface, washed hands, and nothing moving the air around you.
2. Fill the container with cold water to the brim, replace the lid and leave it for twelve hours.
3. Drain every drop. Standing water is the fastest route to a sour, bacterial kit.
4. Stand it in the grow bag, fold the opening down twice, and clip it closed.
5. Warm and out of the sun, in whatever indirect light the room has.
6. Air it briefly every day, then reseal the bag.

4.1 Harvesting and later flushes

• The tearing veil is the signal. Harvest then; every hour after that costs you weight and drops spores.
• Twist at the base rather than pulling.
• Clear the flush in a single pass.
• Re-soak straight afterwards: cold water, twelve hours, drain to nothing, rebag.

4.2 If something goes wrong

• Green, blue-green or grey patches mean mould, most often Trichoderma. There is no saving a colonised kit at that point — bag it and dispose of it.
• A sour or ammonia smell means bacterial contamination. Same outcome.
• Wispy white growth on the mushrooms themselves is usually cobweb mould rather than mycelium. Act quickly and increase air exchange.
• Blue bruising where you handle the mushrooms is normal, not contamination. It is oxidation, and it happens to every psilocybin-containing species.

5. Before you use them

5.1 Preparation

• Have a sober sitter present. Someone who stays sober, stays in the room and knows what you have taken.
• Sit or lie down before you start. Do not stand, walk or handle anything.
• Clear the space. No open flames, no stairs, nothing breakable within reach.
• Have a trip stopper to hand. Knowing it is there matters even if you never use it.
• Nothing else alongside it. No alcohol, no cannabis, no other substance.

5.2 Do not use these if

• Not for anyone under 18.
• Not for anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Do not use if you or a close family member has a history of psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or another serious mental health condition. Psychedelics can precipitate episodes in people predisposed to them.
• Do not use alongside alcohol, cannabis, SSRIs, MAOIs or any prescription medication without medical advice.
• Do not drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day.

Half the kit’s entire yield comes out of the first flush. Whatever attention you have, spend it in the first two weeks.
