A 10 ml bottle combining 10X kratom extract with 10X blue lotus extract — Nymphaea caerulea, sold in the trade as blue lilly. Two plants with quite different histories in a single alcohol-based liquid.

Kratom is the leaf of Mitragyna speciosa, a tree in the coffee family native to Southeast Asia. Its principal alkaloids are mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, and they act at the body’s opioid receptors. That single fact explains both why kratom is dose-dependent in the way it is and why the cautions on this page are the length they are.

Blue lotus is the reason to choose this bottle over the straight kratom liquid. It is the sacred water lily of ancient Egypt, depicted throughout tomb art and, on the evidence of residue analysis, steeped in wine at ceremonial gatherings. Its studied constituents are the alkaloids apomorphine and nuciferine. Reported character is soft — a calm, slightly dreamlike relaxation rather than anything sharp — which is why it turns up in combination products rather than on its own.

3. What the blue lotus is doing in the mix

Combination liquids are easy to be cynical about, so it is worth being specific about what the second plant contributes and what it does not.

• It softens the edges rather than adding power. The reported effect of blue lotus is a gentle, drowsy calm. It is not a stimulant and it is not a psychedelic.
• It leans the blend in the same direction as a larger kratom dose. Where straight kratom is stimulating low and sedating high, adding blue lotus shifts the whole curve towards the calm end.
• Its studied alkaloids are apomorphine and nuciferine. Both have been characterised in the literature; neither is present in the quantities used in pharmaceutical preparations.
• It has a genuine history, not a marketed one. The Egyptian ritual use is documented archaeologically, which is more than can be said for many blend ingredients.
• It does not reduce kratom’s risks. The opioid-receptor activity, the tolerance and the dependence potential are exactly as they are in the straight liquid.

If you have used the straight kratom liquid, do not assume this one behaves identically at the same volume. The kratom concentration is the same; the overall character is not.

• Kratom acts on the body’s opioid receptors. Regular use can lead to tolerance, dependence and withdrawal — this is well documented and is the single most important thing to know before starting.

• Do not use if you have heart, lung, liver or kidney problems, high or low blood pressure, or diabetes, without medical advice.

Blue lotus does not make kratom safer. It makes it calmer, which is not the same thing.
