Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) Poeder – 10 gram
12,50 €
1. Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) Powder – 10 gram
Ten grams of loose kanna powder — Sceletium tortuosum, a small succulent from the arid Karoo and Namaqualand regions of South Africa. This is plain plant material rather than a concentrated extract, which makes it the gentlest and most traditional form we sell it in.
Khoisan peoples fermented and chewed kanna long before it was described botanically, and the practice is one of the better-documented traditional plant uses in southern Africa. Its characterised alkaloids — mesembrine chief among them — act as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, which is an unusually specific mechanism for a botanical.
The producer has not supplied a dosing figure for this powder. Section 3 explains why that matters less here than it would for an extract, and what to do about it.
Legal status: Sceletium tortuosum is not a controlled plant in the Netherlands and is sold legally as a botanical product. It is restricted in a small number of other jurisdictions. Check your local rules before ordering.

3. Plain leaf and extracts
We sell kanna in four forms and they are not interchangeable. Understanding the difference is the whole of buying it sensibly:
| Form | What it is |
|---|---|
| Plain powder (this product) | Dried, milled plant material. The traditional form, the mildest by weight, and the most forgiving. Quantities are measured in fractions of a gram to a gram or so. |
| 10X extract | Concentrated roughly tenfold against plain material. Working quantities drop accordingly. |
| 20X extract | Twice as concentrated again. |
| ET2 extract | A branded, differently processed extract. Not comparable to the multiplier extracts by number. |
3.1 How plain kanna is used
- Traditionally, chewed. Fermented plant material held in the mouth, which is how the alkaloids were absorbed. That method is still described as the most effective.
- Under the tongue. A small amount of powder held sublingually. The commonest modern method and the reason kanna appears as sprays and lozenges elsewhere in the range.
- As a tea. Milder and slower.
- Insufflated. This is done and we would rather not recommend it — it is harsh and it offers no advantage worth the irritation.
- Not smoked, generally. Heat is not kind to the alkaloids.
3.2 On the missing dosing figure
With plain plant material the absence of a producer figure is less serious than it would be with a concentrate, because the material is milder and the margin wider. The sensible approach is the one that applies to any unfamiliar botanical: start with a small amount, wait, and increase slowly across separate occasions rather than within one. Ask us and we will get the producer’s guidance.
What does not change with form is the interaction. Mesembrine is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor whether it arrives as leaf or as a 20X extract, and the warning in section 4 applies identically to all of them.
4. Cautions
- Never combine with antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs), MAO inhibitors, lithium or any other serotonergic medication. Mesembrine is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and stacking two serotonergic agents risks serotonin syndrome — a medical emergency. If you take anything prescribed for mood, anxiety or migraine, ask a pharmacist before considering this.
- Not for anyone under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Do not use with high or low blood pressure, a heart condition, or thyroid or kidney problems.
- Do not combine with other stimulants without knowing your total intake.
- Go carefully with alcohol.
- Do not exceed the stated maximum.
- Store airtight, cool, dry and out of light. Keep away from children.
Plain leaf, 10X, 20X and ET2 are not interchangeable and their quantities do not convert. What does not change is the serotonergic interaction.
- Ten grams of loose Sceletium tortuosum powder — plain plant material, not an extract.
- The traditional form: Khoisan peoples fermented and chewed kanna long before it was described botanically.
- Mesembrine acts as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor — a real and specific mechanism.
- The mildest and most forgiving form we sell, with the widest margin.
- Never with antidepressants, MAOIs or lithium. That applies to every form of kanna.
- Dosing not supplied by the producer; ask us. Not a controlled plant in the Netherlands. 18+ only.
- Order before 16:00 on weekdays for same-day dispatch in plain, unmarked packaging.
