Thailand is where kratom’s documented traditional use is clearest, and it is also where its modern legal history is most instructive. Section 3 covers that, because it explains a good deal about why the plant is regulated the way it is elsewhere.

Kratom’s alkaloids act at the body’s opioid receptors, and red vein at moderate quantities is described as settling and physically comfortable.

Kratom’s legal history in its own country is short, strange and genuinely relevant to how it is treated in Europe now:

1. Traditional use is long and agricultural. Labourers in southern Thailand chewed fresh leaf through the working day, in much the way coca is used in the Andes. That use is documented well back into the nineteenth century and earlier.
2. Thailand banned it in 1943. The Kratom Act made planting the tree illegal. Contemporary accounts indicate the motivation was partly economic — kratom competed with the taxed opium trade — rather than a public health finding.
3. It stayed banned for nearly eighty years, despite continuous traditional use.
4. Thailand decriminalised it in 2021 and removed it from the narcotics list. Kratom is now legal to grow, sell and use there, and a domestic industry has developed.
5. Which matters here because the international picture is unsettled. The country with the longest experience of kratom moved towards legalisation at the same time as several Western jurisdictions moved the other way. That is worth knowing if you are trying to interpret a regulatory headline.

3.1 None of which changes the pharmacology

Legal status and risk profile are separate questions. Kratom acts at opioid receptors regardless of what any legislature has decided, and tolerance, physical dependence and a withdrawal syndrome are documented irrespective of legality. Thai decriminalisation is interesting context and not a safety endorsement, and we would rather present it that way.

Red Thai itself: brewed as a tea at four to five grams, weighed rather than spooned, for an evening rather than a morning.

4. Using it

4.1 Brewing it

1. Measure by weight, never by spoon. Powder density varies enough between grinds that a level teaspoon is not a consistent unit. Four to five grams is the common starting point.
2. Hot water off the boil, stirred through properly.
3. Honey or a strong juice makes the bitterness manageable.
4. Sediment included if you can face it; some of the alkaloid content is in it.
5. Give it an hour before any second thought. Onset is usually around a quarter of an hour.

4.2 50 grams — for a strain you know

Ten to twelve sessions at a typical amount, at a better price per gram, for something you have already tried.

• The 25-gram bag is the trial; this is the restock. Buying fifty grams of something untried is how people end up with a drawer of strains they did not like.
• Airtight, cool, dry and dark. Air, light, heat and damp degrade kratom in roughly that order.
• Not the fridge. Condensation on the way out does more harm than room temperature. The advice for truffles is the opposite and it catches people.
• Date the jar when you open it. Across fifty grams you will not remember.
• And decide your spacing before it arrives. A supply that lasts months removes the natural pause that reordering creates, and frequency is what builds tolerance.

5. Cautions

• Not for anyone under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Kratom acts on the body’s opioid receptors. Regular use can lead to tolerance, dependence and withdrawal — this is well documented and is the single most important thing to know before starting.
• Do not combine with alcohol, sedatives, opioid medication or other central nervous system depressants. This combination is where serious harm occurs.
• Do not use if you have heart, lung, liver or kidney problems, high or low blood pressure, or diabetes, without medical advice.
• Do not drive or operate machinery after use.
• Kratom is restricted or banned in several European countries and under active regulatory review elsewhere. Check your local law before ordering.
• Keep out of reach of children and pets.
