Hollandia is one of the few strain names in this category that is straightforwardly what it says: a variety developed in the Netherlands, by Dutch growers, for the Dutch market. There is no borrowed geography and no invented Latin.

Which makes it a good page on which to explain how truffle strains are actually created, since almost nobody does.

3. How strains are made

Truffle strains do not come from expeditions. They come from greenhouses, and the process is more ordinary and more interesting than the marketing suggests:

1. Start from a sclerotia-forming species. There are not many — principally Psilocybe tampanensis, P. mexicana and P. galindoi. Every truffle cultivar descends from one of them.
2. Grow out many individuals and select. Different genetic lines within a species differ in sclerotia size, density, yield, growth speed and alkaloid content. A grower picks the ones that perform.
3. Isolate and clone. Take a tissue culture from a selected specimen and you have a line that reproduces those characteristics rather than reshuffling them, which is what spores do.
4. Stabilise over generations. Repeat until the line performs consistently, which is what separates a cultivar from a lucky batch.
5. Name it. And here the discipline stops — there is no registry, no verification and no obligation to explain what the parent species was. Which is why so much of this category is sold under invented Latin.

3.1 What that means for Hollandia

• It is a genuine cultivar, selected and stabilised rather than found somewhere and imported.
• Dutch growers have been doing this longest. The Netherlands is where the legal sclerotia market exists, so it is where the selection work has actually happened.
• Which is why potency in this category has risen. Decades of selection for alkaloid content in a legal market produces exactly that, and Hollandia is one of the results.
• And why the name is honest. It says where it was developed, which is the accurate claim, rather than borrowing a rainforest.

It is a strong truffle at the best price of any strong truffle we sell. Fifteen grams is a full session for one person, weighed rather than eyeballed, with the preparation in section 4.

4. Preparation and use

4.1 Getting it right

1. Weigh first, then put the pack in the fridge. 0.1 g resolution. Out of sight is better than on the table.
2. Eat lightly a couple of hours before — toast, fruit, something small.
3. Chew it right through or steep it fifteen minutes in hot water off the boil.
4. Ninety minutes. No exceptions. That is the interval before any thought of more.
5. Nothing planned for the next six hours, or the evening after them.

4.2 Setting

• A sober sitter, in the room. Not next door, not on the phone — present, sober, and told what you have taken.
• Get down before you start. Sitting or lying. Never standing, never mid-task.
• Strip the room. Nothing burning, nothing breakable, no stairs and no open windows within reach.
• Trip stopper within arm’s reach. The reassurance is worth more than the capsules.
• On its own. No drink, no cannabis, nothing else in the mix.

4.3 Cautions

• You must be 18 or over.
• Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Do not use if psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or another serious psychiatric condition appears in your own history or in your immediate family. Psychedelics can bring on episodes in people already predisposed, and that risk is not reduced by taking less.
• No SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs or lithium without medical advice. The lithium combination in particular has been associated with seizures and other serious events.
• Nothing else alongside it — no alcohol, no cannabis, no other substance.
• No driving and no machinery for the remainder of the day.
• Expect some nausea in the first hour. A light meal a few hours earlier helps; an empty stomach makes it worse.
• Store in the fridge, sealed, and out of reach of children and pets.

Truffle strains come from greenhouses, not expeditions. Select, isolate, clone, stabilise — and then name it whatever you like, because nobody checks.
