1. Hawaiian Growkit — 1200 cc

A 1200 cc casing-layer kit built around Panaeolus cyanescens, commercially known as the Hawaiian Copelandia. This is our most rewarding cultivation project and our most demanding one, and at €64.95 it is priced well above the cubensis kits for a reason.

Panaeolus cyanescens is a different species from Psilocybe cubensis, not a strain of it, and the chemistry follows: dry weight for dry weight it typically contains three to five times more psilocybin and psilocin. Psilocin is highly unstable and oxidises almost on contact, which is why these mushrooms bruise an intense deep blue within seconds of being handled — a visible marker of that potency.

If you have not already run a cubensis kit successfully, run one first. This species asks for hands-on care that an all-in-one box does not.

3. Copelandia against cubensis — what actually differs

Nearly everything you know about growing cubensis needs adjusting for this species. The differences are substantial rather than cosmetic:

3.1 What a casing layer is and why it matters here

1. A casing layer is a thin non-nutritious layer — usually coir and vermiculite — spread over fully colonised substrate.
2. It holds moisture at the surface where the fruiting happens, without feeding competitors the way a nutritious layer would.
3. Cubensis tolerates its absence. Panaeolus cyanescens largely does not: without a casing it fruits poorly or not at all.
4. It also changes your routine. The casing must not dry out, which means paying attention daily rather than every few days.

3.2 On potency

The three-to-five-times figure is a dry-weight comparison, and dry weight is not fresh weight — fresh mushrooms are roughly 90% water. What it means practically is that quantities that are ordinary for cubensis are not ordinary here, and anyone carrying an amount across from previous cubensis experience will get a considerable surprise. These are chemical characteristics and reported user experiences, not medical claims.

4. Growing it

1. Pick a still, clean room. No fan, no open window, no pets wandering through. Wipe the table and wash your hands to the wrist.
2. Rehydrate. Lid off, cold water to the top of the box, lid back on, twelve hours untouched.
3. Empty it out properly. Hold the lid ajar and pour until nothing more runs out. Damp is right; wet is not.
4. Grow bag. Box upright inside it, top folded over on itself twice, both paperclips on.
5. Somewhere warm and stable, in ordinary room light, never on a windowsill in the sun.
6. A few seconds of air, once a day. Open, waft, close. That is it.

4.1 Harvesting

• Watch the membrane under the cap. The moment it starts to separate from the stem is the moment to pick.
• Hold low and turn. A twist at the very base comes away cleanly; a pull brings substrate with it.
• Clear the lot in one go, stragglers included.
• Straight into the next cycle: refill with cold water, twelve hours, drain, rebag.

4.2 If something goes wrong

• Any colour that is not white or mushroom-coloured is bad news. Green and grey patches are mould and the kit is finished; seal it and bin it rather than opening it indoors.
• Trust your nose. A sour, ammonia-like or generally wrong smell means bacteria have taken the substrate.
• Fine grey cobwebbing spreading over the fruits is cobweb mould. More air exchange, immediately.
• Bluing where you have touched a mushroom is not a problem. It is oxidation and it is expected.

5. Before you use them

5.1 Preparation

• A sober sitter, in the room. Not next door, not on the phone — present, sober, and told what you have taken.
• Get down before you start. Sitting or lying. Never standing, never mid-task.
• Strip the room. Nothing burning, nothing breakable, no stairs and no open windows within reach.
• Trip stopper within arm’s reach. The reassurance is worth more than the capsules.
• On its own. No drink, no cannabis, nothing else in the mix.

5.2 Do not use these if

• Strictly 18+.
• Not during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
• Avoid entirely if you or anyone in your immediate family has a history of psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or another serious psychiatric condition — psychedelics can trigger episodes in people who are predisposed.
• No alcohol, no cannabis, and nothing prescribed — SSRIs and MAOIs in particular — without medical advice.
• No driving and no machinery for the remainder of the day.
• Legality differs by country and changes over time. Confirm your own before ordering.
• This species is substantially more potent than cubensis. Do not carry a quantity across from previous experience with a cubensis kit.

Three to five times the potency of cubensis, by dry weight. Any amount you are used to from a cubensis grow is the wrong amount here.
