Happy Tea Magic Truffles – Social Butterfly

1. Happy Tea Magic Truffles — Social Butterfly

Social Butterfly is the hibiscus and lavender blend in the Happy Tea range, and it does something none of the others do: it changes colour as it steeps, starting a pale blue-green and turning deep purple. Steep it until the purple appears and use a glass cup or pot so you can watch it happen.

It is built for company — parties, gatherings, the kind of evening where a hot drink is a better prop than a bottle. The natural caffeine in the tea gives it a lift, and Happy Tea Truffles (4 grams, sold separately) are designed to be added to it.

The colour change is not a gimmick, incidentally. It is a genuine chemical indicator and section 3 explains what it is showing you.

Legal status: Sclerotia are legal to buy, sell and possess in the Netherlands. When Dutch lawmakers banned psilocybin mushrooms in 2008 the prohibition was drawn along a botanical line: it named the above-ground fruiting bodies. Sclerotia, the underground nutrient reserves of the mycelium, fell outside that list. Almost no other country makes that distinction, and carrying truffles across a border is a separate matter from buying them here. Check your own law.

3. The colour change

The blue-green to purple transition is real chemistry, and once you know what it is you can read your own cup:

  1. Hibiscus and other flowers contain anthocyanins, a family of plant pigments that are also what makes red cabbage red and blueberries blue.
  2. Anthocyanins change colour with pH. They shift towards blue and green in less acidic conditions and towards red and purple as acidity increases.
  3. As the tea steeps, more acid is extracted from the flowers, the pH drops, and the colour moves along that scale. The purple is the finished state.
  4. Which makes the colour a steeping indicator. When it has gone properly purple, the blend has given up what it has to give.
  5. Add a squeeze of lemon and watch it go further. More acid, more shift — a party trick with a real mechanism behind it.

3.1 The blend

  • Hibiscus gives it the tartness and most of the colour. It is used across North Africa and the Caribbean as a cold drink in its own right.
  • Lavender supplies the floral, faintly soapy top note that people either love or do not. It is traditionally associated with calm.
  • Use a glass cup or pot. Watching the transition is half of what you are buying.
  • The tartness helps with the truffles. Sclerotia taste earthy and sour, and a sharp hibiscus base masks that better than a delicate tea would.

That last point is worth more than it sounds. The most common reason people give up on truffles is the taste, and a strongly flavoured tea is one of the two established ways around it.

4. Using it with truffles

4.1 How it works

  1. Grind the truffles. A 4-gram pack of Happy Tea Truffles is sold separately and is designed for this.
  2. Add them to the tea bag, or steep them loose alongside it.
  3. Steep in hot water that is off the boil. Boiling water degrades psilocybin, so let the kettle stand for a minute first.
  4. Four grams alone is a light, sociable buzz. Shared between two people it is lighter still.
  5. Drink it and wait. Onset through a tea is generally 30 to 60 minutes.

4.2 Cautions

  • Not for anyone under 18.
  • Not during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if you or a close family member has a history of psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or another serious psychiatric condition.
  • Do not combine with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs or lithium without medical advice.
  • Do not combine with alcohol, medication or other substances.
  • Do not use if you have high or low blood pressure, heart or lung problems, or diabetes.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery afterwards.
  • Use in a familiar, comfortable setting with someone you trust.
  • Store truffles refrigerated at 2 °C to 4 °C, out of reach of children.

The colour change is a pH indicator, not a gimmick. When it has gone properly purple, the tea is done.

  • One tea bag of Social Butterfly: hibiscus and lavender, in a blend that changes colour as it steeps.
  • Pale blue-green to deep purple — a genuine anthocyanin pH shift. Use a glass cup.
  • Built for company. Natural caffeine from the tea gives it a lift.
  • Happy Tea Truffles (4 grams) are sold separately and designed to be added.
  • The tart hibiscus base masks the earthy truffle taste better than a delicate tea would.
  • Legal in the Netherlands as sclerotia. 18+ only.
  • Order before 16:00 on weekdays for same-day dispatch in plain, unmarked packaging.
Why does it change colour?
Anthocyanin pigments in the flowers shift colour with acidity. As the tea steeps the pH drops and the colour moves from blue-green to purple. A squeeze of lemon pushes it further.
When is it ready?
When it has turned properly purple. The colour is a genuine steeping indicator.
Do the truffles come with it?
No. Happy Tea Truffles are a separate 4-gram pack designed for these blends.
What does it taste like?
Tart from the hibiscus with a floral lavender note. The tartness is useful, because it covers the earthy taste of the truffles.
Does it contain caffeine?
Yes, naturally occurring in the tea.
Can I drink it on its own?
Certainly. It is a good hibiscus and lavender tea with or without anything added.
