1. Chocolate Mushroom Extract 2 pcs

Two pieces of mushroom extract chocolate. Chocolate is the oldest and still the most popular format for a mushroom edible, for the straightforward reason that it covers the taste of the material completely.

We need to be direct about something before anything else. The supplier has not told us what mushroom extract is in this product. That is not a minor gap: “mushroom extract” covers two entirely separate categories, and which one this is changes everything about how it should be used, who should avoid it and whether it is legal where you live. We have asked the producer and will publish the answer here. Until then, section 3 sets out the two possibilities and what each would mean.

That is the appeal and, as it happens, also the risk — more on that below.

3. Two products with the same name

“Mushroom extract” is used for two things that could hardly be less alike, and the difference is not a technicality:

3.1 Why this matters more in an edible

Edibles are the format in which dosing mistakes happen most often, for three reasons that apply whichever category this turns out to be: they are pleasant to eat, so there is no natural brake; the dose is fixed by the maker rather than measured by you; and onset is slower than any other route because the material has to go through digestion first. That last one is what causes the classic error — nothing after forty minutes, so take another.

3.2 The chocolate problem specifically

Chocolate is the format that most reliably causes people to eat more than they meant to, and the reasons are behavioural rather than chemical:

• It tastes good. Every other format in this shop tastes bad, and the taste acts as a limit whether you notice it or not.
• It looks like a snack. People eat chocolate absent-mindedly in a way they never eat a truffle.
• It is easy to leave lying about. Which matters enormously if there are children or pets in the house. Store it out of reach and out of sight, wherever it turns out to be psychoactive or not.
• Portioning is the maker’s decision, not yours. With two pieces, one piece is your only unit unless you cut it, and cutting chocolate evenly is harder than it sounds.
• Fat slows absorption. Chocolate is largely fat, which means onset through a chocolate edible is generally slower than through the same material eaten plain — and slower onset is the single biggest cause of accidental over-consumption.

4. What to do

1. Ask us before ordering. We will get the extract type and the per-piece content from the producer. It takes an email.
2. Do not eat one to find out. If it turns out to be psychoactive, an unplanned four to six hours is the best case.
3. If you are outside the Netherlands, definitely ask first. The legal position differs entirely between the two possibilities.
4. Assume the stricter case until we confirm: 18+, not with antidepressants or MAOIs, not if there is psychosis or bipolar disorder in your history or your family, nothing else alongside it, and no driving.
5. One piece, then wait ninety minutes, if you use it at all before we have the details.

4.1 Cautions, assuming the stricter case

• You need to be 18 or over.
• Not for use in pregnancy or during breastfeeding.
• Do not use it at all if psychosis, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder run in your family or your own history. The risk of precipitating an episode does not scale down with the dose.
• Keep it away from antidepressants, MAOIs and lithium without medical advice — the lithium combination in particular is associated with seizures.
• One thing at a time: no alcohol, no cannabis, nothing else in the mix.
• Nothing that needs driving or machinery for the rest of the day.
• Some nausea in the first hour is usual rather than a warning sign.
• Fridge, sealed, out of reach of children and pets.

Every other format in this shop tastes unpleasant, and that taste is doing more work as a limit than anyone gives it credit for. Chocolate removes it.
